For decades, scientists have been searching for one of the greatest mysteries of our universe: Dark Matter.
It is said to make up a significant proportion of the matter in the cosmos, but is not directly visible either with the naked eye or with normal telescopes.
Now new measurements could provide further clues.
However, there can be no talk of a final discovery yet.
When we look at the sky at night we see stars, planets and galaxies.
But observations have long shown that visible matter is apparently not sufficient to explain certain movements in the universe.
For example, galaxies behave as if they had significantly more mass acting on them than is actually visible.
This previously unknown component is called dark matter.
Dark matter cannot be easily photographed with a telescope.
Instead, their existence is assumed primarily through their gravitational effects.
Extremely sensitive measuring devices are used to detect possible dark matter particles.
Some experiments are located deep below the Earth's surface in order to shield as much as possible from disturbing cosmic radiation.
If dark matter actually exists, it apparently interacts only very weakly with ordinary matter.
Researchers are therefore trying to record extremely rare interactions.
Direct detection could significantly change our understanding of the universe.
To date, we do not know exactly what dark matter is made of.
Experiments are part of science.
An idea doesn't always work on the first try.
